April is National County Government Month and to help celebrate, CCAWV is hosting our 3rd annual County Government Essay Contest.

This contest is open to all 8th grade students in West Virginia and the 1st place winner and sponsoring teacher will receive a $300.00 cash award each.

We have worked in unison with the WV Department of Education to disseminate the information and contest guidelines to all 8th grade teachers, but we need your help as well!

The title of the essay is, “How does my county commission make life better for me?”

Invite your county eight graders to an actual county commission meeting. Make arrangements to go speak to an eighth grade class and tell them about the responsibilities of the county commission. Better yet, hold a mock county commission meeting with the class and let them participate in the decision making process.

It’s important to let these future voters know what county government does for them and how difficult, but worthwhile, being a county commissioner can be. These eighth graders are our county future!

(Send us a note and let us know what you’re planning; we’d like to report it under our outreach section!)
