The CCAWV Annual meeting was well attended and received high marks from those attending. We worked hard, lots of valuable information was shared, and we enjoyed some nice after hours events. Much thanks to our host county, the Lewis County Commission and Staff for their major efforts to our success. Congrats to all our award winners! The August Legislative Interims included financial reporting from the Regional Jail Authority Director Joe Delong, the same report that was shared at the CCAWV Annual meeting.

Finance Committee "C" discussed the current magistrate court system and proposed changes. Steve Canterbury, WV Supreme Court Administrator, reported on committee work looking at possibilities including going from a county magistrate system to a regional system much like the circuit judge system.

Government Organization subcommittee "C" discussed Deputy Sheriff Reserves and the possibility of broadening the use of reserves across WV, as limited law enforcement officers similar to special deputies. Committee members discussed whether removing some current limitations could enhance their effectiveness. The Berkeley County Sheriff shared his experience with using "reserves" (volunteers who have some in-house training) to extend his law enforcement capabilities. The sheriff expressed concerns regarding training if current limitations are removed. '

Some questions were raised regarding liabilities. I am also checking into this issue and will share more soon. This same committee will discuss county official salary increase methods next month.
