President's Message by Cindy Pyles
It is indeed an honor to have been re- elected to the position as CCAWV President for a second term. Our Annual Meeting in Hancock County was a great success! Thanks to Danny Greathouse and the Hancock County Commission & Staff for their gracious hospitality. This association is a great resource to us as county commissioners, and I encourage each of you to stay involved. If there is anything I can do to help any of you please feel free to contact
me. Don't forget at our fall board and legislative committee meeting in September we will be setting our legislative platform for 2013. If there are any issues that you would like considered please contact our office. Hope to see everyone there!
Message from the President
Well here goes nothing or should I say everything, as we are in one of the most challenging times in our history. The economy has been in a downward spiral, unemployment rates are up and our citizens are looking to county commissioners for answers.
West Virginia is one state that is not suffering financially as are many of the other states. Our financial house is in order and the eyes of the world are focused on our state, counties and cities.
President's Perspective
With the 2012 Legislative session completed, county commissioners will face few changes. Through a strong, coordinated effort , we protected the integrity of county commissions and their budgets to provide services in each county. Our opposition to extending authority to class III and IV municipalities to administer TIF without the advice and consent of affected county commissions was heard and we prevailed. One area which strains county budgets remained unchanged; Regional Jail costs will be the same. Budgetary agenda of other associations could have had an impact on county commissions; however, our efforts proved successful and we prevailed.
Directors Discussion with Vivian Parsons (July 2015)
July is a busy month! CCAWV is hustling to finalize plans for our annual meeting held this year at the Waterfront Hotel in Monongalia County, August 9-11! Our theme “Play Ball,” is very fitting for early August in one of our “university cities!” Tony Caridi, the sports announcer for Mountaineer football will “kick” things off to a motivating start at our Sunday evening welcoming tailgate party! Join us! I think you’ll find the time well spent!
West Virginia was well represented at the NACo conference this month in Charlotte, NC. CCAWV co-hosted the WV delegation dinner of about 40 folks, including attendees and guests! As always, the conference featured great speakers and subject matter! And the networking…we were able to meet with some folks from Oregon to discuss their charter/home rule county government options!
Directors Discussion with Vivian Parsons (June 2015)
At the recent board meeting, members discussed the importance of aligning our legislative initiatives earlier in our process, which will include adopting our official agenda prior to the August annual meeting. That will give us a better opportunity to communicate those positions with the entire membership, answer questions and gather commitment! We'll reinforce those positions and seek legislative sponsors during our fall regional meetings!
We sincerely hope you'll do your part to submit any legislative issues earlier and join/support our efforts to strengthen your CCAWV legislative message!
